Alternative
systems explained
Conventional
The boiler heats a cylinder of hot water at
the same time as it provides heat to the radiators.
The stored hot water can then be drawn off
as required for washing and baths, and the
cylinder is topped-up from the header tank
in the loft. |

Combination
(Combi)
The boiler only heats the radiators until
a hot tap is turned on. Detecting the demand
for hot water, the boiler switches its entire
output to providing it and circulation to
the radiators stops, to resume again as soon
as the hot tap is turned off. With a combi
system there is no hot water cylinder and
therefore no stored water. There is no header
tank in the loft, and hot water is delivered
at mains pressure. |

Which
is right for me?
Combi systems are simpler (there are no header
tanks or hot water cylinders for example)
and therefore cheaper. They are ideal for
smaller households with a low hot water demand.
If you have a large family and need lots of
hot water a conventional system could be your
best choice.
You can now choose super-efficient boilers
which will save you even more of your heating
bills!
Condensing boilers are so-called because the
incoming combustion air is pre-heated by the
hot waste gases so reducing heat losses. This
process cools the outgoing gases to the extent
that condensation occurs in the flue - hence
the name 'Condensing' boiler. The condensate
is then drained away.
These boilers cost more, but by recovering
the waste heat in this way, they are much
more efficient and reduce heating costs giving
a return on the extra investment. Perhaps
more importantly, by saving energy, they help
to protect the environment by combating climate
change. |
